Design, synthesis and optical characterization of highly efficient two photon absorbing, heterocycle based, materials for application in optical limiting, two photon pumped up-converted lasing and two photon excited fluorescence imaging. Synthesis of strong dipolar structure for application in electro-optic devices and telecommunication and establishment of new techniques for the preparation of self assembled, highly ordered organic thin layer films grown by means of biologically-inspired, weak interaction-driven vacuum deposition protocols. Synthesis of new highly fluorescent materials for application in biological imaging and light emitting devices. Optimization of new microwave enhanced palladium-amination and condensation protocols for the preparation of next generation Two-Photon Absorbing and Second-Harmonic Generating organic materials. Design and synthesis of new photosensitizers for Photodynamic Therapy.

He is involved in a collaboration with Prof. Seth R. Marder (Georgia Institute o Technology, USA) on the design and synthesis of novel fully quinoidal heterocycle-based molecular materials endowed with very high optical nonlinearities and on the development of a new class of Two Photon Absorbing dye with peak activities at telecommunication wavelengths. He is also involved in a project focused on the optimization of microwave-enhanced palladium amination protocols and, with Prof Alex Jen (University of Washington, USA) in the synthesis of new thiazole and pyrrole-based polymeric materials for electro-optic devices.
He is currently collaborating, under the scientific supervision of Prof. Giorgio A. Pagani, with Prof. Antonio Facchetti ed il Prof. Tobin J. Marks (Northwestern Univerity – Evanston USA) on the vacuum-deposition growth of highly ordered self assembled acentric thin films for electro-optic applications.
